Roads | Purchasing Unformed Legal Roads | Road Closures

Four state highways run through New Plymouth District – SH3, SH3A, SH44 and SH45.

SH3

  • Northgate - from Hobson St to the traffic signals at Fitzroy (where Devon St East joins Devon Rd adjacent to the Waiwhakaiho Netball Park). 
  • Devon Rd - from the netball park, east out of the city towards Bell Block and beyond. 
  • Leach St - from Hobson St to Eliot St. 
  • Courtenay St - eastbound from Eliot St to Hobson St.
  • Eliot St - from Pendarves St to Courtenay St.
  • Coronation Ave - from Pendarves St to Cumberland St. 
  • Junction Rd - from Cumberland St towards Inglewood and beyond. 

SH3A

  • Link from SH3 near Brixton to SH3 at Inglewood. Road sign showing SH44.

SH44

  • Eliot St - from Courtenay St to Molesworth St.
  • Molesworth St - from Eliot St to Liardet St. 
  • St Aubyn St - from Liardet St to South Rd. 
  • Breakwater Rd - from South Rd to the port.

SH45

  • Leach St - from Eliot St to Liardet St. 
  • Vivian St - from Liardet St to Morley St. 
  • Morley St - from Vivian St to Devon St West. 
  • Devon St West - from Morley St to South Rd. 
  • South Rd - west to Oakura and beyond. 
  • Powderham St - from Morley St to Liardet St. 
  • Courtenay St - from Liardet St to Hobson St. Return to top

Maintenance responsibilities

In general, state highways fall under the responsibility of Transit New Zealand. However, we are responsible for managing the following state highway issues:

  • All street lights (with costs recovered from Transit New Zealand).
  • All footpaths.
  • Road and street nameplates (e.g. Vivian St).
  • Highway named signs (e.g. Mountain Rd).
  • Kiosk signs (e.g. community notice signs at rest areas).
  • Parking, bus stop and taxi signs.
  • Heritage trail signs.
  • Street cleaning (with costs recovered from Transit New Zealand).
  • Traffic signals (with costs recovered from Transit New Zealand).
  • Planting on roundabouts, central islands and raised medians.
  • SH3 Paynters Ave on-ramps management.
  • Maintenance of service covers.
  • Vehicle crossings on urban state highways.Return to top
