Dog Pound

Dog Overview and Registration | Dog Attacks | Dog Obedience | Microchipping | Walking Your Dog | Dog Control Laws | Dog Registration Fees

The dog pound is a holding facility for dogs until they are collected by their owners. Animal control officers are professionals in dog control and make every effort to ensure dogs are safe and cared for while in the pound.

Why are dogs taken to the pound?

  • An animal control officer has picked up the dog wandering on public or private property (other than the owner’s property).
  • A resident has delivered or requested a stray dog be picked up from their property.
  • An owner has delivered their dog to the pound to be re-housed.
  • A dog has been injured.

Where a current registration tag is identifiable or the dog is microchipped every attempt is made to contact the owner of an impounded dog. Any dog impounded for straying in public or private places and not claimed is required by law to be held in the dog pound for at least seven days.

Where is the dog pound?

The dog pound is on Rifle Range Rd. It is open to the public from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

The pound has an outside holding pen for dogs delivered by the public outside of opening hours. If you deliver a dog when the pound is closed, please phone us on 06-759 6060 and leave your name, address, date and details about where the dog was found. If it is a dog for re-housing please advise whether or not it is neutered and some details about the dog, e.g. its name and breed.

If the dog has any severe injuries, you may need to take it to a veterinary clinic or the SPCA.

Re-housing unwanted or unclaimed dogs

Contact us if you are interested in providing a caring home for an unwanted or unclaimed dog.  The cost to you to re-house a dog from the pound is $130.  This fee includes:
